CAPE TOWN - OUDTSHOORN - PORT ELIZABETH & RETURN

Intaba Rail Tours welcomes you onboard the Premier Classe, as we depart from Cape Town on a luxurious overnight trip to Port Elizabeth.  Afternoon drinks are served in the lounge car as we relive the nostalgia of a bygone era as the train meanders through the Boland Winelands of Paarl and Wolseley and then later through the magnificent Nuweveld Pass.  Join us for supper in the dining car as the train steers of the mainline at Worcester and down the wheatfields of the Southern Cape, passing through the towns of Robertson, Ashton and Swellendam.

Early morning (and sunrise, depending of the time of year) greets us as the train approach the town of Hartenbos, where we are greeted by the breathtaking views of Mossel Bay and the Indian Ocean - once branded South Africa's most beautiful "piece of clickty-clack!".  Pushing through the heart of the picturesque Garden Route, we reach George Station and then the train tackles the most breath-taking and torturous climb of the Montagu Pass, over the Outeniqua mountains - making our way through no less than seven tunnels!

After traversing the mighty Outeniquas we descend down the Montagu Pass into the Little Karoo and ostrich country!   Join us for breakfast in the dining car as we depart from Oudtshoorn, from where we continue our journey along the Swartberg Mountains of the Little Karoo, passing numerous ostrich farms and the Stompdrift Dam.  Look out for the "Red Cliffs" which are a combination of pebbles and red soil that tower the plains of the Karoo. We later travel through a gorge which the Traka river carved through the Swartberg Mountains known as the Toorwaterpoort (Magic water gorge).  The gorge is simply spectacular and passengers can admire the towering cliffs, overhanging rocks and rugged boulders in the riverbed.  It is impossible not to be affected by the spirit and other worldness of this incredible gorge.

After passing through Toorwaterpoort, our train enters a drier & more arid region of the Karoo.  Many have regarded this section of railway as some of the most isolated and desolate in South Africa.

After by-passing Klipplaat station (once a thriving railway town) our train steers towards the coast and the Eastern Cape Bushveld before arriving in the friendly city of Port Elizabeth at 16h00.  The train departs the following day (Sunday) from Port Elizabeth for the return journey to Cape Town. Passengers that disembarked at Oudtshoorn for the overnight stay at Buffelsdfrift Game Farm will be collected again at 17h15 on the Sunday evening en route to Cape Town.
